Why Strength Training After 40 Is The Best Investment For Your Health

Most people believe getting older means slowing down with your training. In reality, the opposite is true. Once you reach your 40s and beyond, regular strength training becomes one of the most important things you can do for your health.

At DirksHealth we work almost exclusively with adults over 40, and one thing becomes very clear: the people who stay strong, mobile, and independent later in life are the ones who have been consistent with their strength training.

What Happens to the Body After 40?

From around the age of 40, the body naturally begins to lose muscle mass. This process is known as sarcopenia. Without strength training, adults can lose 3–8% of muscle mass per decade.

This loss of muscle leads to:

• Slower metabolism

• Increased body fat

• Reduced bone density

• More joint pain and stiffness

• Greater injury risk

But the good news is that regular strength training can slow, stop, and even reverse many of these effects.

Strength Training Improves More Than Just Muscle

Many people start strength training because they want to lose weight. While that can certainly happen, the benefits go far beyond appearance.

Regular strength training helps:

• Improve bone density

• Increase metabolism

• Support healthy joints

• Reduce back pain

• Improve posture

• Maintain independence as we age

Many people over 40 express a desire to enhance their strength and improve their movement in daily activities — whether it's carrying groceries, playing with children

/grandchildren, or remaining active in sports.

Why Many Over-40s Avoid Gyms

Unfortunately, many traditional gyms are intimidating environments.

Crowded floors, loud music, and complex equipment can make people feel uncomfortable — especially if they are returning to exercise after many years.

Even worse, many programs push people too hard, too fast, leading to injuries that stop progress before it even begins.

A Smarter Way to Train

At DirksHealth we take a different approach.

Our training programs focus on:

• Safe strength development

• Joint-friendly exercises

• Improving mobility and stability

• Small class sizes

• Personalised coaching

This allows our members to build strength without the fear of injury or feeling overwhelmed.

The Goal: Staying Strong for Life

Strength training is not about becoming a bodybuilder.

It’s about maintaining the physical ability to do the things you enjoy for as long as possible.

If you’re over 40 and want to improve your strength, mobility, and overall health, the best time to start is now.

Your future self will thank you.

Yours in health,

Dirk Hansen
